A project on judgment.

Most of the decisions that shape our lives are made inside games whose rules are only partially understood before the costs are clear and the terms of a situation have been properly read.

Mettle & Ground is a project on developing that capacity. It takes the position that most decisions are made without examination: that effort is committed before the game is understood, that conduct is treated as ornament rather than record, and that what costs a person most is rarely what they were warned about.

The work is a set of frameworks for thinking through those decisions before they are made and making sense of them after. It is written for people who are building something across years rather than winning something in a season.
